Bas was born with a green thumb and has honed that skill his entire life. The oldest of three brothers in a small town in the Netherlands and a descendent of a long line of Dutch farmers, he grew up helping his father and grandfather in their greenhouse and playing soccer in his free time. He married Ali (Co-Founder & Director of Operations) in the middle of it all, and they came together to make their shared dream of Cal Coast Orchids a reality. As a co-founder and the Head Grower at Cal Coast Orchids, Bas keeps a close and keen eye on the health of the plants using sustainable methods, and ensures that the orchids you see in your local store are vibrant. Sarah Glasco grew up in Lomita, California with her older sister Ali (Co-Founder & Director of Operations).
We recommend sealing with a water based (or not harshsolvent based) sealer (waxes created for chalk type paints also work well if they don’t contain harsh solvents). Born and raised in the Netherlands, company co-founder and head grower Bas van Eijk remembers spending his entire childhood in greenhouses. Generation upon generation of horticulturists and agriculturists encouraged Bas to work for several Phalaenopsis orchid growers on Dutch soil before pursuing a degree in Crop & Farm Management. These Cymbidium will only grow to one to three feet tall and they bear up-right flower spikes with often fragrant flowers. These terrestrial orchids will flourish in an intermediate temperature year round.
But be warned- they are not for high heat applications. Do NOT put in dishwasher, they will melt at extreme heats. If painted, make sure it’s well cured, and if you have sanded the paint make certain there is no residual dust. All of these things will interfere with adhesion.
Even if you cut those spikes and put them in a vase, the flowers will last just as long. No wonder Cymbidium is one of the most popular orchids for corsages. And even though there are only 44 species, thousands of hybrids have been developed to satisfy people’s demand for variety.
What a pleasant shopping experience and such wonderful products. No matter which type of Cymbidium you are growing, keep in mind that these orchids like bright light (shaded from direct sun nonetheless). If your plant has weak and lifeless flower spikes and dark green leaves, it’s telling you that it needs more light. Also, at least once a month, flush the potting medium with fresh water with no fertilizer, so that the accumulated salt can be removed from the pot. If that is not done, you can see that the tips of the leaves will turn yellow and burnt.
